AR Filter Design for Instagram
Serious Fun is an experimental design studio dedicated to making fun products with a supportive/relatable messaging for those who struggle with "serious" things like anxiety and depression (i.e. mental health).
For this project, I created an interaction AR filter to promote an upcoming line of products, called the Sunshine Line. This mission statement for the line is as follows:
Things to pick us up when we're low. These are the good trusty friends that help you get back on track with your goals. The ones that check-in on you and make sure you're taking care of yourself. The ones that build you up and make you feel like a ray of sunshine.
The Process
I used a face mesh template while designing for reference to ensure the assets would align as intended on the face.
After deciding what the experience should be, I started by making the assets on Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator: A sun with a hole cut out in the center, a background image of a blue sky with flowers in mobile-friendly dimensions, and blush.
Then, I took my assets to Spark AR and chose a head decoration template to start with.
I separated the user from the background and uploaded the new blue sky background with flowers.
Testing the edits on a moving preview screen enabled me to see how assets interacted on a user in real time.
I created an orange face paint material to impose on the face and uploaded the 2D assets I designed on Adobe onto a 3D plane. The assets were resized and arranged to be layered into the 3D experience.
Interminable rounds of testing followed to ensure the best positioning.
